You know the moment. The first properly cold evening. You hunt for the blankets and suddenly feel the need to start lighting candles!
I’ve been doing a slow autumn edit this week. Nothing big. Just a few small changes, room by room, that make the house feel like it’s actually leaning into the season.
Plus I’ve included a little Halloween edit if you are starting to get excited about all the pumpkins!

🛋️ Living room
The throws come out.
The cushions get swapped.
Overhead light off after 5pm, the lamps on instead.
Lamps are my favourite trick. The kids respond too. Everyone gets quieter, the evening slows down, and I stop feeling like I’m still meant to be doing something.
One chunky knit thrown over the arm of the sofa does more than you think. Warm to look at, perfect to snuggle.

🍲 Kitchen
This is where autumn actually happens in our house.
The candles change to Autumn scents. The fruit bowl looks a bit more seasonal and
the oven starts doing more work – one tray bake, one soup on the go, one loaf if I’m feeling ambitious. I love adding a few décor bits to make me feel good as we spend more time in here again.

🛏️ Bedroom
The heavier duvet comes out of the airing cupboard and aircon fever seems a thing of the past.
In our room, one lamp on my side, one on his, and the big light stays off from about 8pm. I always swap the throw on our bed to a chunkier, more plush one so it’s there if I need the extra cosiness.

🎃 Pretty Pumpkins
The trick is treating the pumpkins like décor first, Halloween second. Go real, not plastic. Mix the sizes and the colours – a big one, a few little ones, a white or a pale sage-green thrown in with the classic orange. Odd numbers always look better than even.
I’ve grouped mine on the console table with the lamp that’s already there, a little garland the kids made, and a few foraged twigs from the garden.
Looks like the house on a nice autumn day, not a Halloween shop threw up in the hallway (there’s time for that). And real pumpkins last for weeks so don’t be afraid to use them.

💛 Small Business Shout Out – My Little Beacon
This week I want to tell you about My Little Beacon – and honestly, the story behind it is brilliant
Founder Rich Hammond came up with the idea after he couldn’t reach his 78-year-old mum one day while she was looking after his young daughter. He said it left him with one question he couldn’t shake: if something had happened, how would his little girl have called for help?
Little Beacon is a simple, screen-free device that lets a young child call their parent or caregiver with one press — and share their live location. No smartphone. No screen. No social media. Just a button, and the reassurance of a direct line home.
I love that it’s solving a real problem, without piling another screen onto a child’s life. Pre-orders open in November and you can join the waiting list now.

There’s something about autumn I’ve come to really love as I’ve got older.
It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing less, but noticing it more. The soft lights. The slow cooker smells. The pumpkin on the step.
