My Top Tips
- Fly into Rovaniemi airport – transfer is only 20 minutes away.
- Ubers are available from Apukka to take you to Santa Village, Santa Park or the nearest town
- Santa Village is free to get into and it’s free to see Santa and is the official Santa – Santa Park charges for entry but includes lots of actives you can do like Elf School, cookie making and there are shows too and of course Santa is also there. This is all in doors which is great if it’s a particularly cold weather with little ones. They are both brilliant and I do recommend seeing them both!
- Apukka provides all ski suits and boots. Pack with you thermals and extra layers.
- The buffet is fantastic and also caters for people with allergies and intolerances
- You only need about 3/4 days to experience Lap land at its finest
- During December it gets dark around 2/3pm
- Best time to see the Northern Lights is August – April
- Pack a couple of bottles of wine with you!
- Your kids will love it! It’s also a great place for couples too.
When you think of Lapland, images of twinkling Christmas lights, cosy cabins, and the jolly figure of Santa Claus likely spring to mind. While it’s true that this enchanting region in northern Finland is a winter wonderland during the holiday season, our family discovered that Lapland has a unique magic all year round. Our stay at the Lapland Apukka Resort outside of Christmas showcased the breathtaking beauty and adventure that awaited us, proving that a visit to this remarkable place is not limited to the festive season…
What is Lapland?
Lapland is not a country – it’s a vast region that laps across northern Finland, Sweden, Norway, and parts of Russia, known for its stunning natural landscapes, indigenous Sámi culture, and, of course, being the legendary home of Santa Claus. With its snowy plains, frosty forests, and shimmering lakes, Lapland is a year-round destination that offers plenty of outdoor activities and cultural experiences, making it ideal for family adventures.

A Family-Friendly Haven
Apukka Resort is a gem nestled in the heart of Lapland, designed with families in mind. The resort offers a variety of accommodations, including cosy cabins and unique glass-roofed igloos, perfect for stargazing at night. The warm and welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed for a memorable stay.
One of the most delightful aspects of Apukka Resort is its commitment to providing family-friendly activities. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the sounds of laughter and excitement from other families enjoying their own adventures. Whether it was children building snowmen or parents sipping hot cocoa by the fire, we felt part of a vibrant community.

Year-Round Santa Magic
One of the highlights of our trip was the realisation that Santa Claus lives in Lapland year-round, not just during Christmas. We visited Santa’s Village in Rovaniemi, which is just a short drive from the resort. Here, we enjoyed meeting Santa himself and exploring the charming shops filled with handmade crafts and delicious treats. It was a magical experience that reminded us that the spirit of Christmas can be felt any time of year.
Excursions for Adventurous Families
Our days at Apukka Resort were filled with thrilling excursions that brought us closer to the stunning surroundings. One of our favourite activities was dog sledding with a team of enthusiastic huskies. The moment we hopped onto the sled, we were whisked away through the snowy trails, with the dogs eagerly barking and pulling us along. The exhilarating rush of the cold wind on our faces as we glided through the pristine wilderness was unforgettable.
Another highlight was our ride on the snow train, a unique and fun way to explore the captivating landscapes of Lapland. The train took us through picturesque forests and over frozen lakes, offering breathtaking views that left us in awe of nature’s beauty and if you’re lucky you can see the remarkably stunning and magical Northern Lights. It literally is breathtaking..
In addition to these activities, we also enjoyed snowshoeing and ice fishing, which allowed us to connect with the serene environment and appreciate the tranquillity of Lapland. Each excursion was thoughtfully organised, ensuring that families of all ages could participate and create lasting memories together.

You Will Love It
Our family adventure at Lapland Apukka Resort was nothing short of magical, proving that Lapland’s charm extends far beyond the holiday season. With its breathtaking scenery, family-friendly activities, and the enchanting presence of Santa Claus, Lapland is a destination that offers unforgettable experiences throughout the year. Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply a serene escape into nature, this remarkable region in Finland has something for everyone. So why wait for Christmas? Pack your bags and discover the year-round magic of Lapland for yourself!
