Back-to-School Without the Last-Minute Panic

We’re half-way through the summer holidays – just a few more weeks of juggling work, playdates, day trips, and the constant request for snacks. Some days feel like family a win, others… not so much. But we keep our expectations real and our caffeine levels high.

If you’re new to the school-life shuffle, here’s my number one tip: start getting organised now. The good shoes and uniform sizes vanish quicker than you think, and trust me – buying school shoes in a half-empty shop the day before term starts is not for the faint-hearted.

👟 School Shoes: This Year’s Picks

Whether you go classic (Clarks, Startrite) or more budget-friendly (Matalan, Next, M&S, John Lewis, Sainsbury’s), now is the time to shop.

  • For boys, the Adidas Tensaur trainer-style shoe still has a cult parent following and even go up to a size 6.5 for those with older ones.
  • If you have a scuffer, go for a darker sole or a reinforced toe to make them last until at least October. Kickers are great for this.

👕 Uniform that Works Hard

M&S is still my go-to for pieces that survive the school year, but supermarkets are brilliant for affordable backups. Soft pinafores = comfort + cute, and I’m firmly on Team short & long sock combo for boys, mine refuse to wear trousers most the year round.

💡 Pro tip: Keep an “emergency uniform kit” in the car or hallway – for the inevitable muddy PE day, mystery stain or missed alarm dramas.

🎒 School Bags & Lunch Boxes

A good bag is worth the investment – it needs to fit everything without turning your child into a leaning tower.

  • Look for lightweight but roomy styles with padded straps (Nike, Hype, and M&S do great ones).

For lunch boxes, I love insulated, wipe-clean designs – they keep food fresh and are easy to clean. Or for the fuzzy eaters, something fun can encourage them!
