Postpartum Hair Remedy

There are many wonderful books out there that educate you how to get pregnant, how to be pregnant, how to give birth, how to breast feed, how to raise a baby etc etc.  They are all fabulous in their own right and have helped me along my parenting journey, of course.  My favourite ones (if you were wondering) for pregnancy; Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth  and when your baby is born Your Baby Week by Week  by Simone Cave and Dr Caroline Fertleman.  These were my go-to bibles that I read religiously.

However, finding a good honest book about what a new mother is to expect after giving birth and not just her new born baby was hard to come by.

Things happen to a woman after she gives birth that I wasn’t aware of. Help!

One of these changes is our hair.  Remember how lovely and thick your hair was when you were pregnant?  Wasn’t it wonderful?  This is because women shed little or no hair due to the lack of the male hormone, androgen.  This hormonal change can also halt the production of sebum (oil).  So when you’re in the last few weeks of your pregnancy, many women sport a mane that’s more abundant than ever before. The lack of sebum makes your hair appear lighter in weight which also adds to the effect of being fuller. Embrace it!

Now remember how your hair fell out in the shower after you gave birth?  This is because once your baby has arrived, many hormones kick in, one of them being the production of androgen, resulting in temporarily losing between 10 and 30 percent of your hair.

So this affected me as a mother and a model around the time my son was 7 months old.   Just when you think you’re feeling, and looking back to your normal self (ish) a new lease of hair sprouts like a fuzzy halo around your hair line.  And it looks shit.  I knew I had to do something about it when I was back in the hair and make-up chair shooting for Marks and Spencer.

The very upfront make-up artist looked at me, cocked her head, squinted her eyes, and asked  ‘Love – what is going on with your hair?’

I sighed a deep sigh and explained I wasn’t channeling Worzel Gummidge, but in fact I had given birth and my hair loss/regrowth was hideously exploiting me.  As my new fuzz was encroaching on my personal life and now my professional life – I knew I had to do something about it.

Then I found out about a product called Nioxin, the number one selling brand for thinning hair – the only professional haircare brand endorsed by the Institute of Trichologists for thinning hair. Happy days!

I had a consultation at one of the salons in London, where I was informed that Nioxin is specially formulated to create the ideal scalp environment, to help tackle thinning hair and promote thicker, fuller-looking, healthier hair.

I was advised to try the 30 Day Nioxin Challenge which consists of using Nioxin’s 3-step hair care routine.  I was cautious at first but as the products are picked specifically for your hair type from their 6 different system kits, I felt more at ease and at prices between £15-£25 for the products, it seemed like a no brainer.

Models need good hair – just as plumbers need a good spanner, or an artist needs a good paint brush.  If you’re not equipped with the right tools, you can’t work properly.

Therefore taking care of my hair is extremely important and incredibly after 30 days, I did see amazing results in increased hair growth, fullness and my fuzzy hair halo wasn’t as prominent as before.  Even the make-up artist noticed the difference at the next shoot.

And there’s more good news! This product can also be used my men, so if you think your partner needs a confidence boost to his hairline, try this product out.

Unfortunately this does happen to many women – usually around the 6/7 month old mark. So unfair I know! x
